Growing up I always had this huge group of friends and I remember when I was in high school I would sometimes see people sitting on their own with nobody to talk to during lunch. I always thought to myself that there wasn't a good reason for me to leave the comfort of my big social circle to talk to these people labeled as outsiders. So I never did. Looking back I wish I did because getting to know people without many friends has actually changed my life, and hopefully their lives too, for the better. First of all, I've always created deep and meaningful relationships with people that don't have very many friends because their attention isn't divided between so many others. The people that I can always count on to listen to me, and care about me, and just always be there, have always been the ones without a lot of friends instead of the incredibly popular people. So if you want somebody that you can always turn to, make a real effort to get to know that person that eats alone, because they will let you become a significant part of their life, as long as they can be a significant part of yours. Second of all, the people without very many friends have actually improved me the most as a human being. Sometimes people don't have very many friends because they're different from the average person in one way or another and by accepting this difference I've learned to be more open-minded, understanding, and forgiving. Being able to see the strengths of different approaches to things has made my life so much easier because I can choose the best way to handle things instead of using the same approach every single time. And as for being forgiving, well, life is a lot less stressful when you don't feel the need to hold grudges all the time. And lastly, befriending somebody that's labeled as an outsider has given me a real opportunity to figure out what really matters to me. Who gets to decide who is different, and who gets to decide when different is bad? Final decisions should come from you, and the only way you can make an informed decision is by giving different a chance. Believe me, if you talk to that person that eats on their own, and make a real effort to get to know them, you will be shocked at how strong of a bond you can have with them. You will be shocked at how much you can improve as a person. And you will be shocked at how much you can learn about yourself. So give them a chance to show you who they actually are. Do you know an outsider? Are you going to befriend them? Leave a comment below and I'll try to respond to everyone! InformalMantis out.
