Alnwick, Rothley and Kirkharle – the 3 Northumberland landscapes of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown

by Nick Owen, historic landscape surveyor. Introduction by Marta Alberti, Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne To mark National Gardening Week (27 April - 3 May 2020) In 2016 Nick Owen came to Newcastle and gave the annual Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne Lecture as part of the INSIGHTS programme. 2016 marked the 300th anniversary of the birth of Capability Brown, a British landscape architect sometimes referred to as ‘England’s greatest gardener’. He was born and learned his craft at Kirkharle in Northumberland. He left for fame and fortune in the south, before returning, in his pomp, to work at Kirkharle, Rothley and Alnwick. What did he do? How did he do it? And what is now left? These questions were addressed in this talk, alongside showing what the landscapes looked like and why he became so immensely successful. ----------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for watching.
