Planting mushroom spore dowels!

Here at Rod Ridge Farm, we are trying something new. I ordered some mushroom dowels offline to try to grow. The directions say to insert the dowel into wood and leave it outside. I have some friends who planted some oyster mushroom dowels in the jugs with great success. The jug has to be clean, and the straw needs to be soaked in boiling hot water to kill off anything that may grow. Once the dowels are placed, I put the jugs in my closet because it is cool and dark in there. These are better growing conditions for the mushrooms. One last thing I didn't mention was that when the straw dries out, go ahead and mist it to keep the moist environment for the spores to grow. #homesteading #selfsufficient #shitake #mushrooms #growyourown
