Before replacing your alternator check that it is not just a bad ground. On a cold winter day my 2004 Subaru Impreza RS’s ABS light came on, then the tachometer and speedometer stopped working while I was driving! When I got home and turned the car off it would not start. I had a dead battery. Turns out my alternator was not getting a good ground and a $11 heavy duty ground cable fixed the problem.
