Mercedes SL 500 Suspension Conversion: How Does It Ride?

Hear one customer's response to Strutmasters' most-asked question: How Does It Ride? We installed a four-wheel Strutmasters suspension conversion kit on a beautiful red Mercedes SL500, then took it for a ride with special cameras to capture every moment. The customer's expectations were more than surpassed! See for yourself. Editor's note: (Our SL enthusiasts will note the customer incorrectly stated during the video that his vehicle had a factory air suspension. It was in fact equipped with the active body control system -- computer-controlled hydraulic struts -- from Mercedes before we installed the passive Strutmasters struts. This illustrates the fact that many customer are unaware of what type of suspension they actually have and how expensive it can be to fix). This video shows why thousands of Mercedes owners across the country are taking off those expensive and complicated factory active body control struts and replacing them with a smooth-riding Strutmasters conversion kit. Strutmasters uses local vehicles, like this one, to design and perfect a four-wheel conversion kit that cost less than just ONE strut at the dealer. The Strutmasters product comes with complete detailed instructions and an electronic module to eliminate the suspension warning light in most vehicles. With our exclusive design, NO SWAY BAR IS NEEDED! We use a double action coil spring -- big coil at the top for normal, slower speed driving and smaller coil on the bottom for performance at higher speeds. When the car tries to dip, these exclusive American-made coil springs go to work and push the vehicle back level. By the way: Our shops tell us it normally takes an additional 12 to 14 labor hours to install the sway bars front and rear. During sway bar installation, you would need to unhook the motor and drop the fuel tank to install. The added labor time alone can be upwards of $1200 to $2100 depending upon rates in your area. The vast majority of our customers have determined adding a sway bar is not cost effective or necessary. The factory Active Body Control system in this SL 500 adjusts the height and handling characteristics of the vehicle by changing the flow of hydraulic fluid into the struts. It works great when new, but it is by far the most expensive active factory suspension system to repair once it starts to go bad. Unless you have upwards of $8000 to $12,000 to invest, there is no "cheap fix" to keep the ABC suspension on your Mercedes. Even re-built or re-manufactured ABC struts are expensive, plus you are still relying on a hydraulic pump and vast array of electronics to be in good working order. The bottom line: A four-wheel Strutmasters suspension conversion system for this vehicle is absolutely the way to go! Fix the entire vehicle for the cost of just ONE replacement factory strut in most cases. And enjoy a great riding vehicle for many more years to come! Obtain the vehicle ID number (VIN) and call Strutmasters at 866-597-2397 to order everything you need to get YOUR Mercedes riding better than ever!
