People! - I Love You (1968), a tribute to Sharon Tate

The Beatles were among Sharon Tate's favorite rock bands, along with The Doors and the newly released Chicago Transit Authority. I wanted to do another tribute to Sharon using a Beatles song, but couldn't quite find one that came out in 1966 or later that I would wish to use. "Michelle" would have been perfect but was a wrong name match, and I almost settled on "Girl" but felt it was too early a song. Revolver was pretty much an anti-romantic album except for "Here, There and Everywhere" which I already made a video of, dedicating it to the Beatles and their first loves. Then a song with lyrics from 1968 came to mind that I absolutely loved (and used to play on guitar and sing to). Written by Chris White of The Zombies, "I Love You" had the misfortune of being placed on the B-side of their single "Whenever You're Ready" in 1965. The Zombies disbanded in 1967 and the US rock band People! recorded their version of the song, releasing it in February 1968 and turning it into a major hit worldwide. It seemed the perfect song to be dedicated to Sharon, and I'm glad the idea to use it came to me. "I Love You" sold more than one million copies and peaked at #14 on Billboard's Hot 100 on June 14, 1968 and at #13 on the Cash Box Top 100 on June 29, 1968. It reached #1 in a number of other countries and in most at least made the Top 10.
