Guitar Tone Tuesday: Ep 192 - 24 Fret Steve Mash Model 1; Something Different For The Modern Player!!! Visually Impaired since birth, Lucas Haneman of the LH Express uses his ears and hands to guide him when choosing gear, writing songs and recording parts. Will you agree with his assessment? Haneman gives you experienced tips and tricks, as well as showcasing lesser known gear in this series. Subscribe and follow to let your voice be heard! Today we feature another local Ottawa (Canada) based builder, this time making unique electric guitars with a sound and aesthetics all there own! This is what GTT is all about, and has been about since the beginning. Steve Mash is a luthier and guitar builder who I've known personally since I was a teanager. I met him through my mentor Wayne Eagles (a magnificent Ottawa based guitarist who taught me so much about the instrument). He's repaired, refretted and refurbished so many guitars for me that I've honestly lost count. In addition to being a great repairman Steve builds guitars like this very cool 24 fret Model 1 in Daphne Blue with it's 24 fret neck, Roasted Maple Fretboard, 25 inch scalelength, Gotoh/Wilkinson hardware and DiMarzio pickups. Here's what Steve has to say about his instrument building process: "I have been building electric guitars and basses since 1977. As a bassist, guitarist and woodworker I noticed the instruments of that time were full of deficiencies. After attending a Led Zeppelin concert in the mid 70's I saw bassist John Paul Jones playing custom 8 and 4 string bass guitars. I then started to build my own basses and guitars. Fellow musician friends soon began to commission instruments after playing my early instruments! After working at Mason And Risch Pianos in Toronto I decided to move back to Ottawa and start building and repairing instruments full time." Only the best lumber and components will do for Steve, and you feel this advantage when you pick up an instrument from his one man shop. Even with all these great materials his guitars and basses are very reasonably priced. They aren't trying to be anything other than what they are, and this is very refreshing as a player. It's nice to pick up an electric from a small shop that isn't just another T or S style, and the craftsmanship is very nice.
