Rabbit damage to a multi variety apple tree

This tree has some sever damage cause by a rabbit. I coated the damaged area with some bees wax but I don't know if that's enough to save it. At the base of the tree the bark has split. It's just the very outside layer. I don't why this happened or even if it's real problem.
