ShopMobile: Eyes-Free Barcode Scanning on Google Nexus One - Trial 2

Tom Fowle, a blind engineer at the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute in San Francisco, does several trial runs of the eyes-free barcode localization and scanning module of ShopMobile, our mobile accessible shopping system for blind and visually impaired individuals currently implemented on the Google Nexus One smartphone. The only sensor this system uses is the phone camera. This trial run consists of three products: a Pringles tube, a toothpaste box, and a tea box. Unlike the previous version of the system that operates on still images (http://www.youtube.com/user/csatlusu#p/u/3/LW_mEVlFpmg), this version operates in video mode by grabbing frames from the video stream and trying to locate and decode barcodes in them. ShopMobile grew out of our research on ShopTalk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLIXhNjRal0), a wearable system for accessible blind shopping. Thanks again for joining us and please come back.
