Permaculture Chop and Drop in the Annual Gardens With Wild Amaranth
The permaculture principle of "chop and drop" is something I've been using for years in my food forest projects, even since I learned it from Geoff Lawton. I've thrown leaves and grass clippings in my annual beds before, but this time Rachel and I are trying something different in our overgrown bell pepper bed. We're using the wild amaranth as a chop and drop plant to see how it works out. It should be a great green manure as well as a good mulch, feeding the soil from above and composting in place, Back to Eden, Lasagna Gardening, no-till or Ruth Stout style. Take your pick! It's an easy composting method, just dropping weeds on the ground around the plants. We'll see if a million seedlings come up in a few weeks...
