Wayfinding and Liveness in Studio 5 || Ellie Chadwick and Helen Brown || Watershed

Ellie Chadwick and Helen Brown are MyWorld Research Fellows with Condense. Working with live, virtual performances in Condense’s virtual stage, Studio 5, Helen has been exploring audience experiences in partnership with the MyWorld Audience Understanding Research group, while Ellie is researching performer presence in the Metaverse. Helen is a user experience designer and behavioural scientist interested in how the curation of virtual performances can support connection, immersion and a sense of liveness for audiences. Helen’s design expertise centres around creating user experiences for digital applications that promote learning and behaviour change. Ellie is a theatre-maker and academic interested in immersive performance, theatre and technologies, and early storytelling (she has recently published her book “Historically-Responsive Storytelling: How Western Theatre is Rediscovering its Roots”). As a practitioner (resident at Pervasive Media Studio) Eleanor produces immersive and multi-sensory performances with her company Sleight of Hand. Ellie and Helen will share some of their findings and reflections from their R&D experiments, with a focus on liveness and wayfinding in virtual performances. The Pervasive Media Studio is a partnership between the Watershed, University of the West of England and University of Bristol. The lunchtime talks are partly supported by MyWorld, a project led by the University of Bristol to support creative industries in the region. Watershed is supported by Arts Council England.
