The Best Rain Barrel System

I've been wanting to build a rain barrel system for a long time! I wanted something that would store a a large volume of water that can be used in the garden during the long periods without rain. I also wanted to build it in a way that it's expandable. In other words, I wanted to add to it over time to make it larger for storing more water for even longer dry spells. Here's what I came up with: It's a simple two-barrel system with PVC plumbing. The barrels I used were black 55-gallon drums with clamp on lids. I chose the black drums over the white or blue ones since they're supposed to grow less algae inside of them by blocking out most of the light. This is a two-barrel rain collection system that I built. It can easily be adapted to add additional barrels for greater rain storage capacity. Each barrel is set upon nine cinder blocks that are positioned in a way to allow for proper plumbing of the barrels. These cinder blocks elevate the system to create greater water pressure. This allows me to use a garden hose to get the rain water to my gardens. One of the great features of this particular system is the downspout diversion piece. The one I selected diverts the rain from the downspouts into the barrels. When the dual-barrels are full, a back-pressure is created that automatically causes the rain to flow back down the downspouts. This eliminates the need for an overflow hose to be connected to the barrels. This device also features a quick release plug that disables the rain collection system any time. This is especially useful during the wintertime. This is a simple DIY rain barrel system that anyone can build with just a few materials.
