BIG GIVE Rory's Well Women's Inga Farming Empowerment Project

Rory’s Well works in Sierra Leone with local teams and rural communities. Sierra Leone is 7th poorest country in the world where people are subsistence farmers living on the edge of survival. The effects of deforestation, accelerating climate change and food insecurity are felt here the most. Since 2018 Rory’s Well have empowered women to set up community farms, which supplement the family diet and income. But land has to be cleared using slash and burn methods which has devastating effects on global warming, sending out vast amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere and contributing to the destruction of the remaining rainforests. Farmland only remains fertile for a couple of years. Rory's Well was determined to find an alternative. Inga Alley Cropping is a form of agro-forestry, growing crops between rows of fast growing trees. It has been show to increase soil fertility, increase crop yields and reduce the need for slash and burn. We are expanding our Inga project into all our existing farms and creating new farms. Our aim is to feed the people - feel the soil - protect the forest
