Bach's cello suites form the cornerstone of the repertoire for cello. The fifth suite is the only one of the six suites that hasalso survived in a version for another instrument, namely the lute. I will play the cello version, with some slight changes to make the piece suitable for the bassoon. In contrast to the preludes of the other suites, the form of this prelude is that of an overture such as we encounter in Bach's orchestral suites. For example: it starts with an introduction, followed by a fugue for four voices. The fugue theme returns in various forms throughout the rest of the movement. Like many fugues, there is a pedal point at the end on the tonic (a pedal point is a sustained tone, in the bass, while other, - i.e. dissonant- harmony or harmonies are sounded in the other parts). The movement concludes with a cadence and ends, in the style of a fugue, with a picardy third.
