Sasha Rubel, Women in African History: An E-Learning Tool, Long version

“Women in African History: An E-Learning Tool,” implemented by the Knowledge Societies Division in the Communication and Information Sector of UNESCO, is an internet platform that consists of interoperable multimedia open educational resources including comic strips, interactive pedagogical units, audio modules, and quizzes that highlight the role of women in African History. The first phase of the project (2012/2013) was dedicated to the development of the architecture of the platform and the production of the first eight modules; a particular emphasis is given to historical women figures from Sub-Saharan Africa and the Diaspora. In this way, the project develops ICT tools for knowledge acquisition and sharing that encourages the general education and ICT capacity of young women, promotes the use of ICTs, and capitalizes on digital local content to promote the link between technology, culture, education, and sustainable development through gender mainstreaming. Ensuring meaningful engagement of young girls with ICTs through the production of relevant local content, the e-learning tool ensures capacity-building of young girls as both decision-makers and producers in the ICT Sector. The first phase is available in English and French. In the framework of Phase 2 of the project (2014-2015), the platform will be available shortly in several African languages, in order to further promote multilingualism in cyberspace and encourage access of rural populations. The tool can be consulted here: English: http://en.unesco.org/womeninafrica/ French: http://fr.unesco.org/womeninafrica/
