The winners will be chosen based on vocal achievement only. Awards are not needs-based, and the winner does not have to be majoring in music in college. ► ABOUT THE HELEN C. ADAMS ◄ Helen Adams was a consummate musician who enjoyed playing the piano for everyone. From a young age, her playing opened the doors to easily making friends and meeting people. In answer to questions about how long she had been playing the piano, she would say, “I can’t remember when I couldn’t play.” She was still playing her favorites right up until a few weeks before her death in 2009 at the age of 94. Helen had a wonderful musical background and an unusual array of performance experiences. When she was young, she played in dance bands and enjoyed duos with a good friend who also was an excellent pianist. She played for “minstrels” and service organizations and accompanied vocalists of all types. She even regularly accompanied a wonderful marimba player. She was the church pianist or organist at her church until way into her 70s, and she continued to play for senior choirs and other groups after that. Those who understand that being an excellent pianist does not necessarily make one a good accompanist will appreciate the fact that she was both! No one appreciated that ability more than her daughter, Linda, whom she regularly accompanied for church and civic performances. Her daughter would always say: “Nothing like having your own built-in accompanist!” Helen received her undergraduate degree from East Texas State (now Texas A&M at Commerce) and she received Master’s Degrees in three subjects: English, Spanish, and music from what is now Texas A&M at Kingsville. She taught junior high English as her “regular” job, but she was a musician in her bones playing every style of music: from sacred to boogie woogie; from George Gershwin to Burt Bacharach. She especially loved the sacred music of Dick Baker and the old standards in popular music. It is no wonder her daughter shared that appreciation for all styles of music and opened scholarship auditions to a wide variety of musical styles. One of her last musical performances for a large group of people was at her 90th birthday party. As his gift to Helen, her great grandson Zach surprised her by playing one of her favorites – “Dizzy Fingers” – and then the pair played it together on two pianos for the guests. Helen would be very pleased and honored to know that her musical legacy would be an inspiration for scholarships given to outstanding young people who share her love for music. ------ To watch more videos of our Scholarship Auditions, please click this link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLP44e88LuKvNwTnuPGaU5bAJCp-04lIO ------ Video Produced by Parallax Digital Media https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmMW25FPHvjwj607fdVdtbg
