133. Depression, Suicide, and Empathy

Chandler Klebs, Mitch J, George Ortega, and David Joseph talk about our inability to maintain positive and happy thoughts. Depression is a fine example of why people aren't able to control their moods and do things they would not if they were depressed. Chandler doesn't believe suicide would exist if people truly had the choice that free will believers often claim we have. If humans had control over their thoughts, feeling, and beliefs, it's highly unlikely that people would need medication and counseling to overcome their depression. Depression leads people to hurt themselves and others. The cohosts of this show think that a lot of these negative feelings come from guilt and blame related to the belief in free will. Mitch also makes the case that we feel empathy for others the more we understand that they did not bring their misery on themselves. Mitch was having extreme audio problems on Skype and so some parts of what he said were not recorded at all. He had to repeat some of what he said so that the conversation still made sense. https://archive.org/details/fwsr0103161 Official Podcast Website: https://freewillscienceandreligion.wordpress.com/ Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/freewillscienceandreligion Free Will, Science and Religion subscription links: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/free-will-science-religion/id1001850850?mt=2 http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/chandler-klebs/free-will-science-and-religion?refid=stpr Internet Archive collection: https://archive.org/details/freewillsciencereligionpodcast Direct RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/InternetArchive-CollectionFreewillsciencereligionpodcast Forum: http://freewillscienceandre.freeforums.net/ Details and software: The audio podcasts are recorded through Skype calls using the iFree Skype Recorder software: http://www.ifree-recorder.com/ Chandler Klebs uses audacity to edit the audio files and export them to 128kbps mp3 files. http://audacityteam.org/ After the episode is uploaded to the archive.org collection, Chandler encodes a video by combining the logo image Trick Slattery made with the audio of the particular episode.
