The Outside Track is a song from a poem written by Australian writer and bush poet, Henry Archibald Hertzberg Lawson in the 1890's. Many who had worked in the outback would set sail for England, leaving behind their mates, probably never to be seen again. The ocean was referred to as "The Outside Track".
