"Any Attempt to Test Our Will, Would be Decisively Dealt With" - Abacha Coup Speech 1993
On November 17, 1993 General Sani Abacha, the then minister of defense, forced Chief Ernest Shonekan to resign, paving way for nearly five years dictatorship in Nigeria. Shonekan was the head of the Interim National Government (ING) that was formed by General Ibrahim Babangida as part of his exit strategy. The coup was not actually a normal type. According to sources in the ING, the coup was sanctioned by Shonekan, who resigned after Abacha informed him that junior officers who were not happy with his leadership were formulating plans to takeover the government. The decision which was initially welcomed by many Nigerians turns out to be highly regretted by all. ---------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to Hisple Media here: www.youtube.com/c/hisplemedia ---------------------------------------------------- OUR INTERESTING PLAYLISTS: Military Coups in Nigeria: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3xNtFz23a9a4DkEo_pqFSpL2xLHGKVe- Lost History of Nigeria: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3xNtFz23a9Zj22ko9Z45kPC0fl4hd7PA Nigerian Civil War (Biafran War): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3xNtFz23a9bSlFltLsqi2evUVeeBbA8f Slavery in Africa and the Americas: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3xNtFz23a9Zo8G-XQUN-I6dHmZPRL7CP 00:00 Background story of 1993 Abacha coup 01:09 Abacha full speech 08:26 Next action ---------------------------------------------------------- Follow us Social Media: Twitter: https://twitter.com/HispleM Facebook: https://web.facebook.com/Hisplemedia Instagram: Tiktok: @Hisplemedia -------------------------------------------------------- Sources: All images are from Google Images and used for educational purposes only.
