Academic vocabulary.

Today I am talking about academic vocabulary. What is specific in academic vocabulary and how could we apply it for scientific publications? We speak in English while visiting the international forums and conferences. All presentations have the exact terminology based on the research area, all academic papers have the exact structure and writing in academic language. All our publications have the abstract in English but the body of the paper can be written in native language. It is a common rule for academics. Academic vocabulary is used for scientific research and the next type of academic papers: research article, conference paper, persuasion paper, scientific journal article, cause and effect paper, case study, experimental research paper, methodology study, essay. Finally in our academic environment we have four types of academic writing: descriptive (your purpose is to represent the facts/arguments of information), analytical (your main purpose is to analyze, to compare, to relate, to examine), persuasive (your purpose is to discuss, argue, evaluate, to reflect your point of view, to recommend) and critical (your purpose is to be disagree, to criticize, to evaluate, to debate). Please, look at the most helpful resource in this discussion - Gardner, Dee and Mark Davies (2013) “A New Academic Vocabulary List”. In Applied Linguistics.
