It's actually the oldest Royal residence still in use in Europe - the King and Queen of Spain stay here while on visits and its foundations can be traced back to Roman times. It was a Moorish palace ... and... also the heart of the citadel built by the Almohads of which only the walls remain and very little else. You'd be forgiven for thinking it was a Moorish palace, but in fact, for the most part, the present structure is from the Christian period, built for Pedro the Cruel in the 14th century -- It´s a fine example of Mudejar architecture -- an Islamic style developed by Moors working under Christian rule. The Ambassadors Hall -- or Salon de Embajadores -- is a great example, and is crowned by a stunning cedar-wood cupola. The Patio de las Doncellas has been recently restored to its original state by archaeologists. Originally covered by a tiled floor, a sunken garden with orange trees and a pool have been reintroduced, giving the courtyard a wonderful centrepiece. The doors, stuccowork, and zellij are all by craftsmen of Granada. The gardens make a wonderful place to wander - an enclosed oasis of green, filled with fountains, pavilions, pools and shady corners....
