University of Virginia School of Engineering Research Scientist Catherine Dukes will be one of the first researchers to study samples of moon soil and rock that have been kept vacuum sealed since being pulled from the moon's surface in 1972 during the Apollo 17 mission - the last to send humans to lunar surface. She will examine the samples using the UVA Department of Materials Science and Engineering's state-of-the-art X-ray photoelectron spectrometer.
