Gravity Sketch Workflow: Exporting Normals Explained

When you open up the advanced options for both OBJ and FBX, you can choose if you want single sided normals, double sided normals, or welded vertices. A normal refers to the directionality of a surface – essentially in computer graphics, since both sides of a surface cannot be seen at the same time, the concept of a normal was created to improve performance – one side of a surface would reflect light, or be visible, and the other side of a surface wouldn’t reflect light, and thus would appear transparent. When exporting, a single sided normal refers to a surface only reflecting light from one direction. Basically only one instance of a surface is exported, and the surface only has a single side that is visible. This is useful if you want to continue modeling, or have a fully enclosed model and want to reduce the complexity of the model. Double sided normals refer to a surface that is visible from both sides. When exporting, essentially your model is duplicated in the same location, however one instance reflects light in one direction, and the other instance reflects light in the opposite direction. Thus it still appears as one surface, but it can easily be seen from both sides. This option is useful if you want to quickly create a rendering and don’t want to worry about the direction of the normals in the model. Welded vertices refers to the vertices in the model being welded. The normals in this case will be an average of the adjacent surface normals. Choosing welded vertices is useful for UV unwrapping or if you plan to continue modeling as well.
